UX Is Semiotics: Why an Interface Is a System of Signs

Semiotics is the study of how signs create meaning, and UX is basically semiotics with deadlines. In an interface, every icon, label, color, layout decision, and micro-interaction is a sign that users interpret in context.

That framing isn’t academic fluff. UX research shows that when key signs are ambiguous (like unlabeled icons) or less available (like hidden navigation), people find less, take longer, and feel tasks are harder, even if they “recognize” the pattern.

This post package translates classic semiotics (Saussure + Peirce) into a practical model you can use in UI critiques, CRO reviews, and design systems work, with three mini case studies and a checklist you can apply tomorrow.

Why UX is semiotics

When someone lands in your product, they don’t experience your Figma file. They experience cues competing for attention: a button that looks tappable, a muted link that feels optional, a red outline that suggests something went wrong. Those cues are signs. UX just tends to call them “the UI.”

Classic semiotics gives a useful backbone for explaining what’s happening:

Ferdinand de Saussure described the sign as a two-part unit: the signifier (the perceivable form) and the signified (the concept). He also argued the bond between them is arbitrary: there’s nothing inherent in a form that forces one meaning across cultures and contexts. People learn the mapping through shared convention, repeated exposure, and surrounding context.

Charles Sanders Peirce makes interpretation even more central. In his theory, signs create meaning through an interpretant (the meaning formed in someone’s mind during interpretation), and he distinguishes three broad ways signs work: icons (resemblance), indices (direct connection), and symbols (convention or habit).

If you’ve ever watched someone hover over a “mystery meat” icon and hesitate, you’ve seen this live. Users aren’t “being dumb.” They’re decoding your sign system under cognitive load, on a specific device, inside their own learned conventions.

The core implication is blunt: your interface doesn’t communicate what you intended, it communicates what users can reliably decode. Research-backed practice (and design systems) is largely about making that decoding more reliable.

The semiotics toolkit you can actually use

common UI icons (heart, bookmark, share, kebab menu, hamburger menu) with multiple plausible meanings listed underneath each to make the point “symbols depend on convention.”

You don’t need a philosophy minor to apply semiotics. You need a repeatable way to separate “what we drew” from “what users think it means,” then reduce ambiguity where it matters.

A practical model, adapted from Saussure and Peirce, looks like this:

  • Signifier (form): what the user can perceive

  • Intended signified (meaning): what you want it to mean

  • Interpretant (inference): what users are likely to conclude in context

Here’s how that becomes usable in UI work.

Separate form from meaning (write both down).

Take a critical UI element and write two lines:

  • Form: “Trash-can icon, outlined, top-right of card, no label.”

  • Intended meaning: “Deletes this item.”

This sounds almost insultingly basic, but it forces clarity. It also makes design discussions less subjective because you can argue about mismatches (“this form doesn’t reliably signal that meaning”) instead of vibes.

Classify the sign: icon, index, or symbol.

Peirce’s categories map well to UI:

  • Icon-like signs: meaning via resemblance (trash can → delete, envelope → mail).

  • Index-like signs: meaning via direct connection (spinner → system is processing; badge count → there are new items).

  • Symbol-like signs: meaning via convention/habit (hamburger menu, kebab menu, “X” close button).

Why this matters: the more “symbolic” something is, the more your UI depends on shared convention.

That can be fine, even efficient, but it makes consistency and labeling more important.

Favor recognition over recall.

Usability guidance repeatedly emphasizes reducing memory burden: don’t make users remember what things mean if you can help them recognize it immediately. That’s one reason labels and visible navigation patterns often outperform icon-only or hidden patterns.

Make icon meaning explicit when stakes are high.

Nielsen Norman Group recommends that icon labels be visible at all times, and notes that labels are particularly critical for navigation icons (and that hover-revealed labels fail on touch devices). This is semiotics in practice: when the signifier is ambiguous, add a clarifying signifier (text) to stabilize meaning.

Design systems echo this. For example, Material guidance explicitly calls out using labels when icons/ symbols are abstract, and that navigation items need labels for clarity and accessibility.

Use redundancy when meaning is expensive.

This is where semiotics and accessibility line up nicely. WCAG’s “Use of Color” guidance is explicit that color alone can’t be the only way you convey information, indicate an action, or prompt a response. If your only error indicator is “turn it red,” then some users literally can’t decode the meaning.

On the practical UX side, NN/g recommends “noticeable, redundant, accessible indicators” for error messaging, using conventional visuals but not relying on a single cue.

Reality check from icon research.

Recent empirical work on icons (outside the UX-blog loop) also points to the same conclusion: people’s perception and preference are shaped by qualities like familiarity, recognizability, and concreteness. In plain UX terms, “make it easy to decode.”

Mini case studies

These aren’t “semiotics case studies” in the academic sense. They’re everyday product decisions where a semiotic lens helps you design (and troubleshoot) faster.

Hamburger menu: recognizable, still costly

NN/g’s newer research suggests the hamburger icon is now widely recognizable, with most users interpreting it as a hidden menu or list of categories.

But recognizability isn’t the whole story. In earlier quantitative testing, NN/g reported that hiding main navigation hurts discoverability substantially (they summarize it as “cut almost in half”), while also increasing task time and perceived difficulty. Semiotics translation: the symbol might be understood, but the system still hides meaning behind an extra action, so the sign is less available when the user needs it.

Practical pattern: if navigation is core to success, don’t make it purely symbolic and hidden. Consider a hybrid (expose a few top destinations, keep the rest behind “Menu”), and if you do use the icon, pair it with a clear label when it’s high impact. Baymard’s mobile navigation benchmarking also highlights how mobile navigation is often difficult and commonly collapsed behind the hamburger, making the design details matter a lot.

Checkout “Apply” buttons: a label that creates ambiguity

Baymard has a clean example of semiotics-meets-CRO: checkout experiences that require users to click “Apply” to save input changes. Baymard’s research notes that at best this creates unnecessary friction and at worst it creates confusion that can contribute to checkout abandonment when users can’t resolve what’s happening. They also report that a notable portion of sites still require “Apply” for checkout fields.

In Baymard’s own button-design guidance, they describe a better pattern: auto-updating changes and letting users proceed with the primary “Continue” action, rather than introducing an extra “Apply” step for ordinary field changes.

Semiotics translation: “Apply” is a weak signifier because it doesn’t clearly map to the user’s mental model of what they’re trying to do (“save shipping method,” “confirm address,” “continue checkout”).

The result is interpretive uncertainty.

Practical rule: if you must include an “Apply” button (promo codes are a common exception), make the cause-and-effect immediate and obvious: show what changed, confirm state, and keep action labels tied to user goals.

Error states: color isn’t a language by itself

Red is a conventional signifier for “error,” and conventions are valuable. NN/g even notes that red plus high-contrast styling is a conventional error visual.

The problem is when color is the only carrier of meaning. WCAG’s “Use of Color” guidance is explicit about not conveying information only through color differences, and it gives exactly the kinds of examples designers use every day (required fields in red, errors shown in red).

Practical fix: treat errors as a multimodal message. Pair color with plain-language text, structural cues (error summary, field-level messages), and clear recovery paths. NN/g’s form-error guidance focuses on helping users recover by clearly identifying problems and allowing easy correction.

Semiotic checklist and workflow

Apply semiotic thinking like you’d apply accessibility or performance thinking: as a repeatable pass on a critical flow, not as a one-off brainstorm.

Use this checklist for a “semiotic audit” of one journey (signup, onboarding, search, cart/checkout, upgrade):

  • Make meaning explicit for primary actions. Write the intended meaning of each primary CTA in one sentence, then check whether the label and placement encode that meaning without guesswork. Guidance on command naming and action labels consistently emphasizes clarity and predictability.

  • Treat icon-only controls as guilty until proven understandable. If you wouldn’t bet a conversion metric on users decoding it instantly, add a visible label or restructure the UI so meaning is obvious from context.

  • Ensure states are redundant, not “clever.” Error/success/disabled/loading should be understandable via color + text + structure, not color alone.

  • Test discoverability, not just recognizability. Users can “know what the icon means” and still fail because they don’t see it or don’t think to look there. Hidden navigation is the textbook example.

  • Enforce one meaning per sign across the system. If the same icon, color, or label means

    different things in different contexts, you’re training users to distrust your UI. This is why design systems stress consistency in labels and iconography.

For CRO practitioners, this is the practical bridge: conversion friction often shows up as interpretive uncertainty. People don’t drop because they’re lazy, they drop because they can’t confidently predict what happens next. Semiotic thinking is a disciplined way to reduce that uncertainty.
