Building a Travel App: A Work in Progress
Traveling is all about discovery—new places, new cultures, and new experiences. But finding truly unique and hidden spots can be a challenge. Most travel platforms focus on mainstream destinations, leaving independent travelers searching through scattered blogs, forums, and social media posts to uncover something different.
Why This Project?
As a designer passionate about user experience, I’ve seen how difficult it is for travelers to find authentic, lesser-known destinations. Many existing apps focus on trip planning, hotel bookings, or highly touristy locations, but there’s a gap when it comes to discovering hidden gems curated by locals and experienced travelers.
That’s why I’m working on a travel discovery app designed to help explorers uncover secret spots worldwide. The goal is simple: to make it easier to find off-the-beaten-path experiences without spending hours researching.
What Will This App Do?
While it’s still a work in progress, here’s the vision:
Curated Hidden Locations – Discover places recommended by locals and seasoned travelers, from secret beaches to underrated cafés.
Real-Time Travel Advice – Get insights from other users about accessibility, safety, and the best times to visit.
Community-Driven Contributions – Users can share their own finds and tips, making the platform a constantly evolving resource.
Offline Mode – No internet? No problem. Save locations and access them anytime, even when you're off the grid.
This is just the beginning, and I’m refining the features based on user feedback. The goal is to build something that truly enhances the travel experience by making unique places more accessible.
What’s Next?
Right now, I’m in the research and prototyping phase, analyzing competitor platforms and identifying what’s missing in the market. Understanding how travelers search for information and what frustrations they face is key to designing an intuitive experience.
I've already conducted a competitor analysis and user research, which has helped shape the project. Here are some insights I’ve shared so far:
